1937. Angelo grows up in a small village in the Sardinian mountains, with his mother Delia and his older brother Agostino, an invalid from the First World War. After witnessing the murder of his brother, harassed by the Black Shirts, he feels a sense of betrayal by his community. He decides to leave his home town to enlist in the army with his charismatic friend Bastiano, hoping for a better life. He lands in Spain during the civil war, where the Italian army supports the nationalist faction, fighting for a cause that does not represent him.
