Anele is an unemployed, solitary artist, who lives in Langa, the oldest township in South Africa. Here the apartheid regime has left an indelible mark on people and Anele, as a guardian of those sad memories, goes around collecting stories, archiving pictures, and documenting traditional rituals and ceremonies. From the township perspective, the so called “post apartheid condition” is an empty label only capable of evoking ghosts of the past and dragging feelings of rage into the hope of the present.
As a journey through his everyday life, we slowly discover Anele’s world, the struggle between the love for his township and the frustration of living in such a poor and disadvantaged place. His art is always there to guide those meditations, transforming reality into a flux of images played like the jazzy notes of a “rhapsody in black”.
